Drivers of Commercial Vehicles Banned from Texting

April 10th, 2010  |  Published in Atlanta Georgia Truck Accidents, Other Injuries Atlanta Georgia

The U.S. Department of Transportation recently began enforcing a new rule that prohibits drivers of commercial vehicles, mostly trucks and buses, from texting while they drive. We have seen so many unnecessary deaths, damages and exhausting legal battles result from the distractions texting causes and are more than supportive of the implementation of this rule.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation website, the new legislation has already been put into effect and is intended only for commercial vehicles that surpass the 10,000 pound mark. Drivers who are charged with violating this new rule may have to pay civil or criminal fines of $2,750, according to the website.

Because drivers are 20 times more likely to get in accidents if they’re texting, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, we are confident that this new rule will help us build a more successful defense for our clients who are suffering from personal injuries or other damages that are the result of this violation.

Conversely, if you have been wrongly accused of violating this rule and need legal advice or representation, we will help you determine whether or not the officer who pulled you over was authorized to do so and how severe your fines/point penalties should be. We’ll make sure you aren’t penalized for a crime you didn’t commit and help reduce your fines if the texting violation was legitimate.

We look forward to being able to defend you better than we have ever been able to before with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s enforcement of this new rule.
