Keeping Above-Ground Pools Safe

While constant supervision and the installation of barriers are necessary to prevent drowning and submersion incidents in below-ground pools, extra precautions should be taken with above-ground pools. Unlike below-ground pools, which can be protected with motor-powered safety covers, above-ground pools have steps and ladders that can cause additional risks. It is important for parents or guardians with above-ground pools to lock up or remove the steps and ladders that give children access to the pool.

It is relatively inexpensive to purchase locks for the steps and ladders that are attached to an above-ground pool. These locks can prevent children from being able to climb the steps leading to the pool while unsupervised. Some steps and ladders are installed with an ability to be detached from the pool when it isn’t in use. Taking the time to detach these facilities could end up saving your child’s life. Any barriers that can prevent the child from getting in the pool, including fences and gates, additional walls, door alarms and power safety covers, should be taken into consideration to prevent drowning and submersion incidents.

Most drowning and submersion incidents occur in an individual’s home when a child slips out into the pool area or backyard unnoticed. As personal injury and wrongful death attorneys, we have represented far too many individuals and families who have suffered a tragic loss due to unsafe conditions in their private pool or community facility. During Georgia’s hot summer months, we hope our expertise and experience can help families and individuals take the precautionary measures necessary to keep their loved ones safe.
